Two hand-built bulls stand close together, and a rider sits on the back of one. Pale slip covers the bodies, with rust-brown marks on the flanks.
Tomas Varga builds the figures in coils and slips them by hand before the firing.
Exclusive Tomas trained as a sculptor in Budapest and has worked in clay since 2004. His hand-built figures mix folk myth with a sharp modern edge, and he fires most pieces in a wood kiln behind his studio near Kecskemet, Hungary. He divides his year between Hungary and Almaty, where he runs a summer workshop for ceramists.

A group exhibition of ceramics at Focus Gallery in Almaty. The opening night is on 6 November at 18:00, and everyone is welcome to attend.
A solo exhibition by Adam Schwartz. His large painted dishes and bowls show figures that float, climb and tangle in half-remembered landscapes.
Watch the potters at work in the Almaty studio and see new pieces up close.
