Several hand-rolled spheres sit in a wide bowl. Each sphere has a different crackled glaze in green, blue, orange or grey.
Tomas Varga rolls the spheres in several sizes, so they settle unevenly in the bowl.
Exclusive Tomas trained as a sculptor in Budapest and has worked in clay since 2004. His hand-built figures mix folk myth with a sharp modern edge, and he fires most pieces in a wood kiln behind his studio near Kecskemet, Hungary. He divides his year between Hungary and Almaty, where he runs a summer workshop for ceramists.
For centuries caravans carried silk, spices and ideas along routes that stretched across Asia toward the Mediterranean.
A group exhibition of ceramics at Focus Gallery in Almaty. The opening night is on 6 November at 18:00, and everyone is welcome to attend.
A solo exhibition by Adam Schwartz. His large painted dishes and bowls show figures that float, climb and tangle in half-remembered landscapes.
Watch the potters at work in the Almaty studio and see new pieces up close.
